Tomorrow, Angelica Garcia releases her new album, Cha Cha Palace, and so she’s giving us an early treat with ‘Penny In My Back Pocket’. Like previous List Pick ‘It Don’t Hinder Me’, Garcia proves herself as a force to be reckoned with. This new track is opened by a purposefully in-your-face “yeah yeah yeah” before we swoop into a track of dramatic drones and unique beats. We especially love the poppy build-up to the sing-along chorus with that catchy line, “I keep a penny in my back pocket for good luck.” This idea of luck isn’t a foolproof one though as reflected in the unpredictability of this song’s composition, which swerves through a soundscape of staccato synths, potent pauses, partially submerged brass and chaotic vocal samples. For the young American artist, “‘Penny In My Back Pocket’ is about keeping up your stride.” As she further elaborates: “To be human is to stumble along your path. The song asks for clarity— whether that means a clear sign or knowing when to hold oneself accountable.
